I was doing random iTunes searches - I typed in Fran Drescher (I'm a huge fan), expecting maybe to find some comedy stuff, and saw that she released a single, "Eye for an Eye." Now, Fran Drescher's voice is well-known, but it isn't for singing; I was curious to hear how her Queens squawk would sound - I know she exaggerrated her drawl for comedic effect on television, but I wasn't expecting her to sound like Streisand, either.
And well, she doesn't sound like Streisand, but the record's still kind of amazing. She has a deep, sexy, slightly raspy voice, similar to Cyndi Lauper's lower register. The production by Gavin Lurssen and Dan Garcia, sounds a bit like the stuff Daniel Lanois does for Emmylous Harris, U2 or Bob Dylan - atmospheric, slightly woozy, with lots of verb and steel pedal guitar.
It's a great single - it would be interesting to see what she would do with a whole album's worth of songs. Proceeds of the songs benefit Drescher's Cancer Schmancer project, a nonprofit dedicated to educating women about cancer - something close to Drescher's heart, as she is a cancer survivor. While the charity part of the record is great, this song is worth buying even if you weren't doing good by buying it.
